ADAPTIVE SKILLS TRAINING

Adaptive Skills Training (AST) is an intervention aimed at helping individuals develop practical skills necessary for daily living and social functioning. This training is especially relevant for individuals with developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, mental health conditions, or those recovering from neurological injuries. The main objective of AST is to enhance the person’s ability to function independently and effectively in various environments.

Key components of Adaptive Skills Training include:
  • Daily Living Skills:
Teaching individuals how to manage personal hygiene, household chores, cooking, budgeting, and using public transportation.
  • Social Skills:
Enhancing interpersonal skills such as communication, understanding social cues, conflict resolution, and building relationships.
  • Vocational Skills:
Preparing individuals for employment through job-specific training, time management, and workplace etiquette.
  • Educational Support:
Assisting with academic tasks, study habits, and organizational skills.
  • Community Integration:
Helping individuals participate in community activities and access public services.

AST programs are often tailored to the specific needs of the individual, using a variety of teaching methods including modeling, role-playing, direct instruction, and hands-on practice. The goal is to improve the quality of life by increasing independence and enabling individuals to navigate their daily environments more effectively.
